Anne Arundel was a prominent figure in colonial Maryland. She was the daughter of Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour, and was born in 1615 in Wiltshire, England. Anne Arundel was married to Cæcilius Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, who founded the colony of Maryland in 1632.
Although she never visited Maryland herself, Anne Arundel played a significant role in the governance of the colony. She was actively involved in the management of the family's estates in Maryland, and was known for her political astuteness and sound judgment.
Anne Arundel was also a devout Roman Catholic and is credited with establishing the first Catholic church in the colony. She was a patron of the arts and supported numerous charitable causes throughout her life.
Anne Arundel died in 1649 at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy of service, generosity, and commitment to Maryland's growth and development. The county of Anne Arundel in Maryland was named in her honor.
